A pro-insect sustainability report draws the farmland each protein costs as a plot of land — and scales every plot’s side to the acreage, so beef’s real 11× land advantage over mealworm balloons into a field roughly 121 times the size. Lay the same five numbers out as bars and the gap is genuine but far smaller, and the one metric the plots skipped — energy — is the one insects lose.
01The claim
A kilogram of beef protein devours an entire field; a kilogram of mealworm protein barely covers a doormat. Draw every protein to the land it actually costs and the case argues itself — switch the plate to insects and the footprint shrinks to almost nothing.
02The trick
Every number on the chart is real and printed right under its plot — these are the land-use figures from a peer-reviewed life-cycle assessment: to grow one kilogram of edible protein takes about 18 m² for mealworms, 45 for milk, 46 for chicken, 55 for pork and roughly 198 for beef. Mealworm genuinely does need the least land of the five; even the headline is true. The distortion is entirely in how the plots are drawn. Each is a single square scaled uniformly by its value — taller *and* wider in the same proportion — and your eye judges a shape by its ink, which is its area. Area grows as the square of the side, so beef’s plot, drawn about 11 times taller than mealworm’s, is also 11 times wider and ends up covering roughly 11² ≈ 121 times the pixels for 11 times the land; chicken’s honest 2.6× becomes about 6.6× the ink. This one is doubly self-incriminating, because the quantity being drawn *is* an area — a count of square metres — so mapping square metres onto the edge of a square counts the dimension a second time. Our coffee-cup almanac and hydrogen balloon pull this stunt on cups and balloons; here the value was an area to begin with, and the chart squared it anyway. (This exhibit is our own demonstration in the house style of a food-tech sustainability report, drawn from the study’s published figures rather than from any real firm’s deck.)
03The fix
Give each value one dimension instead of two and the case for insects survives — honestly. As plain bars on a zero-based axis, beef’s 198 m² really is about 11 times mealworm’s 18, a large and genuine advantage, while milk, chicken and pork cluster around 45–55, roughly 2.5–3× mealworm rather than the sky-versus-speck rout the squares staged. If the plot metaphor is worth keeping, scale each square’s *area* to the value and beef’s side shrinks to just √11 ≈ 3.3× mealworm’s. The tell is the familiar one: shapes that balloon far past what their own labels say — and a special alarm should ring whenever an area (land, floor space, a market’s “size”) is drawn as a shape whose width encodes it, because the squaring then lands twice. One honest caveat travels with the honest chart, and it is the number the report left off the page: the plots showed land, where mealworm wins big, and could as fairly have shown greenhouse gas, where it wins again (14 kg CO₂e per kilo of protein against beef’s 77–175). But they quietly skipped energy — and there mealworm’s 173 MJ per kilo is *higher* than milk (36–145) and chicken (80–152) and about level with pork and beef, because the larvae have to be kept warm. The study’s own summary puts it plainly: conventional protein takes “similar amounts of energy”. Insects are a real land-and-climate win, not a free lunch on the power bill — and the land win never needed a second dimension to look impressive.
